Winter is one of the most beautiful seasons to explore Seoul.
If you want to enjoy Christmas lights without rushing, I recommend combining Cheonggyecheon Light Festival, Myeongdong Cathedral, and Euljiro Shinsegae Department Store into one relaxed walking route.
This route is perfect for travelers who enjoy city walks, photography, and local winter atmosphere.
🎄 Cheonggyecheon Lantern Festival – Best Time to Visit
Cheonggyecheon Light Festival is one of Seoul’s most popular winter events.
On weekends, it can be extremely crowded, especially after sunset.
Best time to visit
-
Weekdays are strongly recommended
-
Ideal time: 5:00–6:30 PM
-
Avoid: Friday & Saturday evenings (7 PM onward)
If you visit earlier in the evening, you can enjoy the lanterns comfortably and take better photos without large crowds.

⛪ Myeongdong Cathedral – Go Inside, Not Just Outside
Myeongdong Cathedral creates a special Christmas atmosphere every winter.
Many people only take photos outside, but the real beauty is inside the cathedral.
Local tip
-
Step inside quietly and enjoy the lights and interior decorations
-
Early evening or late afternoon is best
-
Great place for calm photos and a peaceful break from busy streets
The contrast between the busy shopping area and the quiet cathedral makes this spot unique.

🏬 Shinsegae Department Store (Euljiro) – Best Viewing Spot
Shinsegae’s large Christmas media display is famous every winter.
Instead of standing right in front of the building, I recommend watching it from the Central Post Office side, across the street.
Best time
-
Weekdays
-
6:00–7:00 PM or after 9:00 PM
-
Fewer people and better viewing angles
From this side, you can see the full display without being pushed by crowds.

🚶 One Walking Route – 20 to 30 Minutes
All three locations are within walking distance:
-
Cheonggyecheon → Myeongdong Cathedral → Shinsegae Department Store
-
Total walking time: about 20–30 minutes
Plan your route well, walk slowly, and enjoy the winter city lights.
🍴 Food Recommendations Nearby
After your walk, I recommend eating near Namdaemun Market, which is very close to Shinsegae.
You can also check my previously shared local restaurant recommendations nearby.
This area is perfect for enjoying warm Korean food after a winter walk.
